NBN Speeds
As a quick guide to the general speeds and tier groups available across the selection of NBN bundles at this point, you can refer to the list below.
There are six primary speed tiers:
-
NBN 12
-
NBN 25
-
NBN 25
-
NBN 100
-
NBN 250
-
NBN 500
The availability of each speed will depend on your NBN connection type and location. While it might be tempting to settle for a plan with the highest speed, NBN plans are priced by speed tier so the higher speed you get, the bigger your bill. Make sure you choose a plan that fits your needs and your budget.
Please be aware that these may look a little different from the way that they are explained and displayed on each provider’s website.
For a more comprehensive explanation of how some of the NBN suppliers describe their obtainable upload/download speeds throughout different times of the day give our internet experts a call and we’ll help you navigate through the internet market while helping you find a fair deal.

How Do I Compare NBN Plans?
Internet Monster and our team of professional, dedicated staff can help you compare NBN plans and find the best deal we have available with our partnered providers.
We know how stressful and time-consuming it can be to navigate through all of the available NBN plans and hunt for the best NBN service provider which is why we’ve made the process easy.
With so many internet options now available, it is important to consider every aspect, including your needs, your usage, and your household size for starters or you could be overpaying on a plan that you don’t even need.
In larger populated areas and cities, it is not uncommon for there to be dozens of NBN options to choose between and that list is currently growing. This is why you need a comparator that is not only fluent in the latest internet plans but can also help you navigate through the saturated market. With such a wide range of competitive NBN suppliers and an array of intriguing plans, it’s difficult to determine what plan is right for you. At Internet Monster, we present customers with the best possible options that we have on offer and can also help answer many internet-related questions you may have.
How Do I Switch NBN Plans?
If you’re looking to switch NBN providers, the process is quite simple. Call Internet Monster now and let our internet experts help assess your needs so we can get you connected to the right internet plan that’s suitable for you.
Will I Need New Equipment For a New NBN Plan?
If you’re looking to switch NBN providers, the process is quite simple. Call Internet Monster now and let our internet experts help assess your needs so we can get you connected to the right internet plan that’s suitable for you.
But before you contact us, it is worth taking note of the number of people in your household and an idea of what your internet usage looks like. This will give you a good place to start when comparing NBN plans that suit your needs perfectly.
You may be surprised at what you discover as for many homes, surfing the internet, streaming HD movies, and listening to online music apps is so commonplace that it can be very easy to lose track of just how often you make use of the internet and the amount of data that this uses up
Once you have a clearer idea of the sort of internet applications that you make use of and the amount of time that you spend using these online applications and services, ask yourself what kind of budget you are hoping to spend for this capability and how much you are really looking to pay for your new NBN broadband package.
If you have any other questions about the different NBN plans that interest you, give us a call on our free helpline number so that we can give you the advice and support you need to find a better deal.
Will I Get Charged If I Cancel My NBN Plan?
This depends on the type of plan you are on. For instance, if you’re on a monthly plan you will most likely be able to cancel your plan at any time after settling your final NBN bill. In some cases, you’ll need to pay fees like modem charges if you decide to leave an NBN plan early. Many telcos will advertise a modem as “free,” but that’s only if you stay connected with the provider for a specified period of time (i.e. 12 months, 24 months, etc.).
If you are currently on a contract, there may be early termination fees if you decide to cancel before the contract expires. These charges can vary depending on the provider, with some calculating the amount based on the remaining months you have left on your contract.

Compare Internet Plans in 3 Easy Steps
What NBN Speed Is Right For Me?
One thing that is very important to consider when you compare NBN plans is speed. At present, six NBN speed tiers are available to consumers.
There is no industry standard for the terms, speeds, and package names being used by NBN service providers when promoting their options to consumers and some even refer solely to maximum evening NBN speeds in the information provided about their best NBN plans, which may not always be the total picture of the NBN network service you will be using through the course of a normal day. It is worth keeping this in mind when comparing NBN provider reviews and looking for the best NBN speed tier package.
The simplest way to find out the most accurate and impartial advice on some of the best NBN deals and informative recommendations that clearly explain how the NBN tiers work is to contact Internet Monster and speak to a member of our internet team. They will always offer clear and simple advice about various top NBN providers allowing customers who take advantage of our free service information and assistance about many of the best NBN plans on the market.
What NBN Plan Has the Fastest Speed?
One of the most popular questions about NBN is which plan has the fastest speed.
Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer.
We advise anyone who is currently looking into NBN plans and is comparing NBN providers to give Internet Monster a call first so that we can assess your current internet plan and offer a tailored solution based on your household needs and lifestyle.
One of the most important factors to consider is that most of the current NBN plans advertise a number of options with alternative NBN tier speeds for you to choose between. While the higher-priced NBN deals do offer faster upload/download speeds, some also provide you with information that describes higher typical speeds, or evening speeds. This can mean that the optimum speeds available are promoted rather than an estimation based on the busier or peak times of the day.
If you need clarity on what speed is right for your household or just want to compare NBN plans and speeds, give us a call NOW.

What NBN plan is right for me?
Taking a moment to think about what you really need from your new NBN internet plan and its services will help to narrow down the best plan that best suits your needs.
The time that you spend actually using the internet plays a large factor when comparing popular NBN plans, but if your household has any special requirements that are usually provided via access to the internet, such as; provision for contacting essential or emergency services or important connections to family and other healthcare professionals, then this should play a very large part in the choice that you make when signing up for the best NBN plan for you.
NBN Plan Technical Support
If it is important that you receive local technical support rather than being transferred to an internationally based call centre it is worth taking note of the levels of assistance your NBN provider can offer locally.
Lower Data Usage
If it is important that you receive local technical support rather than being transferred to an internationally based call centre it is worth taking note of the levels of assistance your NBN provider can offer locally.
Need Provisions For Impairment Or Disability?
If you or a member of the household requires special services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) then it is important to compare NBN providers that are knowledgeable about the additional requirements needed by this service, such as needing a specialised router and telephone equipment to function.
NBN Plans For Gamers
Online gaming, Twitch streaming and related social forums play are no longer niche interests and for many, this is the prime reason for having high-speed internet access available to them. For these users, NBN comparison is vital to find at plans that offer unlimited use with no throttling at certain times of the day.
NBN Plans For Streaming
While not a matter of life and death, for many households and internet users, entertainment plays a massive part in their home life. When looking to compare NBN deal, take note of your genuine movie and TV watching habits and pick the best NBN plan that is tailored to the need for unmetered usage. Great for lovers of Netflix and Foxtel viewers.
NBN Plans For Large Family Households
Most families now use multiple devices for their internet use, from smartphones to tablets and TV’s. Even solo users can find it difficult to keep note of their internet use and this can be almost impossible in households of 4 or more.
For such customers, it is usually best to compare NBN providers that offer the best NBN plans with unlimited data. This is also an option worth noting for shared properties that contain multiple tenants.
Compare plans from the Top Internet Providers
Telstra
Telstra is currently Australia’s largest internet provider and one of the most reliable telcos you’ll find. They offer a large selectionof support options, speeds, and features. While Telstra is notorious for being above-average in terms of price per plan, you’ll get some of the fastest evening speeds around and benefits you won’t find with many smaller telcos.
Customers can expect to be contract-free when they sign up for Telstra’s NBN plans. However, if you leave within the first 24 months, you may need to pay a prorated modem fee that’s calculated based on your term.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is NBN (National Broadband Network)?
The NBN (or National Broadband Network), is a modern broadband infrastructure that is installed across Australia to replace the older, existing network that is presently used to access to the internet.
The now tiring and old copper wire network that was Australia’s standard method of gaining access to the internet has been replaced by a technologically-superior alternative. This NBN network combines fibre optics, satellite, and fixed-wireless technologies.
Most importantly, NBN is known for offering much faster network speeds than what Australians have been using previously with the older ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+ network and more traditional methods that provide home broadband plans.
- Will Comparing NBN Plans Help Save Me Money?
It depends on the type of NBN internet plan you are looking for. NBN plans vary based on speed, price, and features. The faster the speed, the more you’ll likely pay. If you need more than what you’re currently getting out of your internet plan, we recommend shopping around and comparing the best internet plans currently available.

- What Should I Look For When Comparing Internet Plans?
When you’re comparing internet plans, the three most common factors you’ll likely consider are price, speed, and availability. But there are other important considerations to keep in mind that could get you an overall better deal on an NBN plan.
Discounts, credits, and incentives: Many internet providers will entice new customers with special deals like credits, one-off discounts, and benefits. Remember, while this sounds great on paper, it’s important to consider the benefits that will help save you money in the long run as opposed to a one-time discount.
Additional fees: Some internet providers have additional fees that could add up to be a significant amount.
Bundle discount: If you’re looking to bundle your phone, internet, and even your energy, a bundle discount could save you money.
Add-ons & extras: Several broadband providers will offer new customers add-ons or extras like a free month’s access to streaming services, video games, and more.

What is Typical Evening Speed?
Typical Evening Speed is known as the period of peak internet usage, usually between 7pm and 11pm when most people are online. Most internet users complain about low NBN connections speeds during these evening hours. The reason for this is that most people use the internet around these hours which results in network congestion and slower speeds. The typical evening speed of an NBN plan is generally seen as how fast it works during the aforementioned hours. Evening speeds tend to differ considerably from one internet provider to another, so it’s worth looking at this when choosing an NBN plan.
If you want to learn more about typical evening speeds or just want to switch to another internet provider, we recommend giving us a call at Internet Monster and our specialists will help find you the best deal we have available.
How Can I Get Faster Internet Speeds?
There are a few things you can do to try and increase your NBN speeds. One thing you can do is check your hardware. If you’re using an older modem for example, you’ll need to upgrade to an NBN-compatible unit in order to take full advantage of your current plan.
Another thing you can do is check that all your cables and connections in your home are secure. Any loose cables may result in an unstable connection. You’ll also want to remove any clutter around your modem. Having your modem blocked by large objects can interfere with your WiFi connection. As a result, by keeping your modem free and clear of any obstructions, you may be able to improve your internet speed.
Lastly, if you’re experiencing slow speeds you may want to switch to a new internet plan. There’s only so much you can do on an inherently slow internet plan that’s essentially capped at a maximum speed. A long-term solution to slow speeds is choosing a better plan. If you’re looking to switch, give one of our internet experts a call now so we can help you find a fair deal on an NBN plan that’s tailored for you and your household.
- What NBN Provider Offers the Best NBN Plan?
We know just how difficult it can be when the time has come for consumers to compare NBN providers, searching for the best NBN deals and cheapest NBN plans for their household.
Especially with the current number of options and NBN deals that are presently being advertised by the top NBN providers out there.
At first glance, there are a number of well-known and more publicised NBN plans presently available on the market that are being advertised by the largest NBN service providers.
While these NBN plans initially seem like a more obvious choice for some, it is certainly worth taking time to compare NBN plans by looking into the number of smaller NBN providers who are offering some very competitive NBN bundles.
Each of these are also recommending several alternate options concerning NBN availability that could be an even better match your NBN network needs to an even higher degree.
Many may be able to suggest NBN plans that are a far more suitable fit when you fully assess the type of NBN broadband package that you actually need and the connection and NBN speed tier that would best suit your home internet requirements.
Of course, there are also other some other factors to consider such as the issues of connection speeds concerning AVC and CVC, which can dramatically affect the real speeds that your NBN connection provides at certain times of the day.
And yes, we know how confusing all of these additional pieces of conflicting data can be when looking into the best NBN plan for your needs, making the simplest option to call us so that we can do all of the hard work for you.
- What is AVC, CVC and How Does It Affect My NBN Speed?
NBN Co. is the company responsible for constructing the infrastructure known as the NBN network, fully taking over from the older copper-wired ADSL systems that we have all been using up until now, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
While NBN Co. has built the NBN framework, they are not the ones who will be providing us with the services to access it for connecting to the internet and the ability to use our devices on a new NBN internet plan.
That job is being met by the various retailers who are now offering many consumer alternatives to the different NBN plans and NBN speed tiers to homes across Australia.
Also known as RSP’s (Retail Service Providers) these companies have been not only obtaining the capability for their customers to access the NBN network, a term known as AVC (Access Virtual Circuit), which in turn allows for faster connection speeds dependant on the NBN price plans and speed tiers that each customer has signed up to.
But these companies have also been purchasing the equivalent of airtime, or bandwidth from NBN Co., known as CVC (Connectivity Virtual Circuit), which determines how many of their customers can access the NBN network at the same time, a very important factor at busier spells of the day.
The more bandwidth or CVC that they have bought, the less chance that these systems will slow significantly due to the increased traffic and it is this that has been causing bottlenecks during more active periods and left consumers with considerably slower internet speeds than they were expecting of their shiny, new high-speed NBN bundle.
However, nobody knows just how much of this airtime has been bought by each of the NBN network providers and it has to then be shared out amongst each and every one of their customers. The general hope is that less frequent users will subsidise the heavier consumers, but reports of slow internet access by some have been proving that this is not quite that simple.
Some larger NBN providers have, as a rule, been able to offer more consistent connection speeds mainly due to their greater CVC purchasing power but, as with much of the information available concerning the NBN rollout, there are a lot of additional factors at play that are affecting the overall outcomes.
Remember, that if all of this sounds more than a little confusing, you are not alone and helping make sense of it all is exactly what Internet Monster is here for.

- Will I Be Charged If I Cancel My Current NBN Plan?
When your wireless NBN service gets connected, an NBN technician is needed to install equipment both inside and outside your home. Internal equipment needs to be installed in a location where:
-
there is an accessible power outlet within 1.5 meters
-
there are no wet surfaces nearby (i.e. bathrooms, sinks, etc.)
-
there is easy access
In most cases, your NBN technician will choose an appropriate installation point for the equipment.
FTTB and FTTN connections generally won’t require a technician to install equipment at your property – although this may vary based on whether your home is connected – so you may only need to plug your modem into the socket. If your home has multiple phone sockets, consider installing the modem at the central socket so it’ll be in a main area where the internet is used. Doing so will reduce the number of barriers that your WiFi signal needs to bypass in order to reach the device that you’re connecting to the internet.
