What Answers You’ll Get On This Page
Switching to a new internet provider can be advantageous in more ways than just a cost perspective. For one, you could get faster speeds, a more reliable internet connection, and even inclusive benefits like free streaming services or discounts. If your internet bills are too high, you could switch to an internet plan offering a lower speed but at a better price. Regardless, even if you’re satisfied with your current provider, it’s still worth shopping around and comparing the market. This article will break down everything you need to know about switching providers so you can make an informed decision.
-
If you’ve been with the same provider for years, you might not be aware of newer, cheaper plans available.
-
Switching providers is generally straightforward and can be done with minimal downtime, especially with proper planning and coordination with your new provider.
-
Many internet service providers offer promotional deals. Compare these offers to find the best value, but also check the price after the promotional period ends.
-
Switching to a new internet provider can take time and effort. Instead, consult with an expert at Internet Monster. Our team will compare internet service providers, perform a serviceability check to see what technology types are available in your area, and help you secure a fair deal for a fair price.

How Do I Switch to a New Internet Provider?
First, check the details of your current contract. Look for the end date and if there are any early termination fees. If your contract is about to end, it’s an ideal time to switch without facing penalties. Conversely, even if you have to pay an early termination fee, the savings from a better deal might outweigh the cost.
Next, determine what you and your household need from an internet service. Do you want a high download speed for streaming movies and online gaming, or are you only using it for casual activities, like browsing and emailing? Understanding your usage profile will help you choose reliable internet services that fits your lifestyle without overpaying for features you don’t need.
Next, you’ll want to explore the available internet service providers in your area. Start comparing their plans based on speed tiers, data limits, cost, and additional features. Look for providers that offer a good balance of performance and price.
Many telcos offer promotional deals to attract new customers. These can include discounted prices for the first few months, free entertainment subscriptions, or bundling discounts when you combine the internet with other services like TV or phone.
Before switching, contact your current internet service provider and let them know you’re considering leaving. They might offer you a better deal on a new internet plan to retain you as a customer. This can be a great way to negotiate a lower price or improved service without the hassle of switching.
Once you’ve chosen a new provider, you’ll need to contact them and sign up. Make sure to read the contract carefully, and be wary of any setup fees, equipment costs, and the duration of the promotional rates. Understanding the terms can help you avoid unexpected charges.
After your new internet service is up and running, it’s time to cancel your old service. Return any rented equipment to your old provider to avoid additional fees. Also, it’s worth checking in with your old provider to confirm that your account is closed to prevent future billing issues.
If this sounds too time-consuming, call the experts at Internet Monster. We’ll hold your hand throughout the entire process. First, we’ll complete a serviceability check to see what technology types are available in your area. Then, we’ll compare internet plans and providers within our network and get you the best available deal. What Are the Different NBN Connection Types?
There are four primary NBN (National Broadband Network) connection types – FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, and FTTB. Below, we’ve broken down each connection type
Fibre to the Premise (FTTP): One of the more reliable internet connection types, an FTTP connection involves running an optical fibre line directly into your household.
Fibre to the Node (FTTN): An FTTN connection incorporates fibre optic cables that run from a cabinet to your household, which allows you to receive an NBN signal.
Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): This type of connection utilises an existing copper network to relay a connection from a Distribution Point Unit (DPU) to your home. The DPU is generally found inside the telecommunication pits in your neighbourhood.
Fibre to the Building (FTTB): An FTTB connection is used in apartments or larger buildings. A fibre optic cable is installed within the building and connects to existing cables to connect each unit to the internet.
How Do I Make Sure I’m Getting the Best Deal?
Aside from switching providers, there are several things you can do to ensure you’re getting the most value for your money, such as:
-
Regularly Comparing Plans: Periodically shop around to see if better deals are available.
-
Monitoring Promotions: Look for new customer promotions or special deals that providers might offer throughout the year.
-
Reviewing Your Usage: Regularly review your internet usage to ensure your internet plan still meets your needs. Depending on your contract, you can adjust your internet plan without incurring fees to something more suited for you.
How Do I Transfer My Internet Service When Moving Home?
Moving to a new home is exciting, but it also comes with its fair share of stress, especially when setting up your internet. Whether staying within the same city or moving across states, transferring your internet service can be straightforward if you follow the proper steps.
Before you do anything, review your current internet contract. Look for the contract end date and if there are any early termination fees. If your contract is about to end or you’re on a month-to-month plan, you’re in luck—switching or transferring your service will be easier. If you’re in the middle of your contract, you’ll have to decide whether cancelling is worth the fee.
Once you have your new address, check if your current provider services that area. You can do this by visiting your provider’s website and entering your new postcode or suburb. If your provider doesn’t service your new location, you’ll need to look for a new provider.
Contact your current provider to inform them of your move and schedule the transfer of your internet service. Generally, you’ll want to do this at least two weeks (at minimum) before your move. This gives your provider enough time to arrange for any necessary equipment delivery and appointments. Some providers may allow you to schedule the transfer online, while others may require a phone call.
Remember to update your billing address and any account details with your provider to reflect your new home address. This will ensure you continue receiving important correspondence and billing information.
If this sounds like too much work for you, call the experts at Internet Monster. We’ll hold your hand throughout the entire process. If you don’t know whether your property has an existing NBN connection, we can check on your behalf. If you aren’t eligible for NBN service, we’ll provide you with other competitive home internet options. We’ll compare NBN plans and providers within our network to make sure you get a fair deal for a fair price. Once you have an internet plan that is tailored to your budget and needs, our team will book the connection date for you. So, call us today and let our internet experts handle your next big move.
After I Move, Do I Need to Return Any Equipment?
After you have moved, your provider will provide instructions on what to bring and leave. Some telcos may offer the option to purchase the equipment instead.
Make sure you leave any NBN-related equipment, including any power supply cords, behind. The NBN equipment at your old address will not work at your new address.
When Should I Notify My Provider About My Move?
It is recommended to notify your internet service at least two to four weeks before your move. This gives your telcos enough time to process your relocation request, schedule any necessary technician visits, and ensure that your service is up and running when you move in.
