Mobile Broadband

Widely available throughout Australia, mobile broadband is the internet delivered via a mobile network. Similar to the internet access you get with a mobile plan, but without the ability to receive calls or texts, mobile broadband can function through devices such as a data-only SIM card which can be used with a tablet, smartphone, or any other devices that accept a SIM card. With data-only SIM cards, however, it’s common to find limited data inclusions that can range from 1GB to over 100 GB as opposed to unlimited data.

Some providers offer mobile broadband plans that come with a modem or dongle, which is more all-inclusive instead of buying a standalone SIM card. ADSL

ADSL sends data signals through copper cabling. It’s the connection many households had before NBN was rolled out in Australia. Now that the NBN rollout is complete, ADSL has decreased in popularity. There are three versions available: ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+.

In terms of availability, if you want a fixed line connection but NBN is not available at your address, you’ll likely opt for ADSL instead.

ADSL is notably slower than NBN, with the fastest version, ADSL2+, only able to support speeds up to 24Mbps. Many providers have also stopped offering ADSL connections as the old copper cables are being cut off in favor of faster fibre optic cables.

VDSL

VDSL is similar to ADSL broadband in that it still uses the established copper wire network we have been using for the last couple of decades to deliver home broadband to consumers and requires dedicated VDSL modems to access the wireless internet.

Where it differs is that it also uses updated fibre networks to access local exchanges and this “part fibre” broadband allows for faster speeds than are currently enjoyed by users of ADSL modems for their home broadband.

Home Wireless

Home wireless works in a similar fashion to mobile broadband with some extra features. You usually get a higher data allowance and a larger modem. A home wireless broadband plan is an alternative to the NBN, offering similar speeds or even faster if 5G coverage is available in your area.

Early termination costs are dependent on the plan you’re currently on. If for example, you’re on a plan that’s ‘month to month’, you should be able to pay your final NBN bill and cancel without incurring additional fees. In other cases, some internet providers will impose modem charges if you leave early. Some telcos include a modem for ‘free’ with their plan, but it’s only free when you stay connected for an established period of time – like 6 months, 8 months or even a year. There are four primary NBN connection types – FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, and FTTB. Keep in mind that the type of connection you receive depends on your location.

Fibre to the Premise (FTTP): One of the more reliable connection types, FTTP connects your home to the NBN network through fibre optic cables. A technician is required to install a utility box outside of your home and a connection box inside.

Fibre to the Node (FTTN): This type of connection requires a technician to install a box or cabinet in your area – typically at the end of your street or nearby. Fibre optic cables are then run from the cabinet and connect with the network to allow your household to get an NBN signal.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): This type of connection utilises an existing copper network to relay a connection from a Distribution Point Unit (DPU) to your home. The DPU is often found inside the telecommunication pits in your neighborhood.

Fibre to the Building (FTTB): An FTTB connection is generally used in apartments or larger buildings. A fibre optic cable is installed within the building and connects to existing cables to connect each unit to the internet.

If you’re in the market for an internet plan, chances are you’ve seen the term ‘typical evening speed’ advertised on several retailer websites. When NBN providers discuss speeds, they’ll generally advertise typical evening speeds. This is different from maximum potential NBN speeds that are labeled in tiers (i.e. NBN 50, NBN 100, NBN 250, etc.).

Typical evening speed is a time frame where network usage is the busiest (7:00pm to 11:00pm).
